Why adding Roguelike elements to a Battle Royale is like peanut butter and jelly

Alright, we shared our plans for adding the Roguelike moniker to BAPBAP around a month ago, so I guess we should talk a bit more about it, eh? I’ll try and share as much detail as I can without getting fired 👀.

Also no, I’m not going into the roguelike vs roguelite argument. Just read it as roguelite if it bothers you 👿.


Summary


Why Roguelike?

It just fits!

So battle royale as a genre is about starting a run where you can be put into a wide range of scenarios - you could be outnumbered or flanked or get shitty RNG, but it’s all clutch-able.

On the flipside, you could also have the best RNG but get an unlucky flank and still die.

These just so happen to be the exact same essences of great roguelikes as well!

We’ve always had this direction internally, so it just clicked to dive fully into it, in fact…
